REMEMBRANCES

October 30, 2021

REMEMBRANCES, presented by the Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra in the Long Prairie - Grey Eagle Secondary School auditorium and streamed live to our YouTube channel, bit.ly/thelpco.

With musical reflection, we performed a beautiful arrangement of America the Beautiful, written as a commemoration for Veterans Day 2001 in the months following 9/11, and Nimrod, from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, often played on British Remembrance Day, commemorating the lives of soldiers lost during World War I. We also performed Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in memory of Bachyavelli (Michael Hoover), who was our composer in residence. At the time of his death, we had been in discussions with him to compose the final two movements for the LPCO.

Finally, we heard music from Florence Price, who lived from 1887 to 1953. She was the first Black American woman recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra - the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933.
